My Head Phones recently died after I placed them onto my chair and then 5 minutes later promptly sat on them, crushing them to death! They were old headphones but were of decent quality and importantly comfortable to wear, but as I needed some quick and cheap replacements I found myself in PBTech holding a very cheap pair of Panasonic RP-HT161. At $20 I wasn't expecting much from them and as PBTech were out of stock of the trusty but cheap Sennheiser 201's I thought I'd take a chance on them. On the face of it the headphones read OK. With a 2m 3.5 stereo jack and 30mm drivers and advertised with XBS (Extra Bass System) I was expecting them to be OK with music from my Phone. However the Bass was rather disappointing from what was advertised. That said, when I used them with the spoken word and music that was lighter in bass I was pleasantly surprised.
The headphones themselves are more circular in fitting rather then the elongated 201's which didn't cause me much hassle but they would be a problem if you have larger ears as they prevent a good seal from the surrounding environment. The head band is easily adjusted for longer heads and isn't too tight that it causes red ears or discomfort, at least for me. Other than the lack of Bass, these are great for your bag to check camera recordings and on set editing, but if you can spare the money go for more. If I sit on these and break them I wouldn't be too upset, but as soon as pay day comes round it'll be a new pair of 203's which I think are perhaps the best budget headphones around. But if you want to spend a little more money, then look no further than Jonny Elwyns guide for Headphones to use when editing.
