We’ve all seen them even if we don’t know what they are. They usually hang around the Director’s or Cinematographers neck and we see them picking them up, squinting through them, dropping them and then pushing forward, re-positioning actors to suit. But are they of any us to us, the indie and enthusiast film maker? The answer is yes, as they help you realise the composition of your scene.
You don't need to spend a fortune to get yourself some pretty high end kit. The list we have below is for new kit but if you hunt about for second hand kit you might be able to get something like a Canon EOS 700D. The items here might no add up to £600 exactly but its not far off and there's always a deal to be had on the internet somewhere! We've added in some NZ pricing too but in a few places we can't find the same model and so have placed an alternative in.
So, if you have a smart phone, you have a camera to shoot video with!
To get the best from your phone you'll need a few simple guidelines and perhaps a few cheap accessories to help you get the best from it. The editing process consumes an awful lot of your time. Important decisions are made here and ultimately the Edit will make, or break, your production. So to help it all go smoothly make sure your edit suite is set out as well as it can be. Here’s a few of our suggestions for a small set up.
The Room For most of us this will be the spare bedroom, or home office, but whatever your space, make sure it has all the right features. Lighting should be controllable. So turn off the main lights, pull down the blinds and use lamps in the appropriate places to help control the lighting. It has to be said that perhaps the most popular editing applications for enthusiasts may well be iMovie. It's free / very cheap with your Mac and it's also that it's a very capable editing package offering a solution for almost everyone.
But what do you need to run iMovie? Do you really need to go an buy the latest iMac to edit with iMoive? Well, if you have the money then please don't let us stand in your way. But if like us, you have a life to take care of and pay the bills then perhaps there are some cheaper alternatives? |
